About Us

The goals of the Center for Microbiome and Human Health, the CMHH, directed by the Cleveland Clinic are to elucidate the roles of the varied microbiomes in human physiology and then exploit this knowledge to develop novel therapeutics and approaches to disease management to improve the health and wellness of our patients. To do this we are:

  1. Providing a critical mass of basic, translational and clinical investigators and physicians at the forefront of microbiome research.
  2. Providing the infrastructure for microbiome-related discovery and therapeutics.
  3. Developing industrial and entrepreneurial relationships for the development of microbiome targeted diagnostics and therapeutics.

The Center for Microbiome and Human Health provides and manages core facilities available to clinicians and scientists across all Cleveland Clinic Institutes. These core facilities allow investigators to 1) leverage sequencing-based platforms to analyze microbial community structure in clinical samples, 2) culture and genetically engineer human commensal bacteria for functional studies, 3) perform germ-free and microbial transplantation studies in mouse models, and 4) analyze the microbe-derived metabolome in biological samples from humans or animal models. Additionally, the Center supports the large and growing biobanking of materials with integrated patient medical history necessary for clinical and translational studies.
